Psychologist speaking my native language in Berlin wanted!
It was the medium through which feelings were expressed by our adult caregivers and us, and the primary mode of our education. It's the language through which we communicated with siblings and peers, where the values of our immediate environment were conveyed.
This all culminates in a language that's not just the most comprehensible to us, but also the one we resonate with the most. Furthermore, the cultural context, coupled with shared experiences of living abroad, often influences the inclination towards using one's native tongue in a therapeutic setting. This stems from an effortless understanding and "feeling" of cultural nuances.
Among those who seek consultations or therapy at our Praxis, a majority are fluent in at least two languages. However, when it comes to intimate, deeply personal topics, often of utmost significance, many gravitate naturally towards their mother tongue.
Such a choice seems wholly intuitive and natural. In both initial and long-term engagements with a psychologist, feeling secure and at ease in conversation is pivotal.
If, for instance, English was our language of upbringing, then it's in English that we'll find the most comfort. The language of our upbringing is the one in which our dearest ones, often our parents, spoke to us during childhood.
Many psychotherapy clients articulate that when conversing in their native language, they feel better understood, more empathetically listened to, and safer. After such sessions, they often describe a sensation of relief. This relief usually emanates from an uninhibited, exhaustive (in the most complete sense), and precise articulation of their concerns, something that naturally and effortlessly transpires in one's mother tongue.
“Psychotherapy, as I perceive it, represents a sophisticated avenue for personal growth and development. A unique kind of self-care.
Sometimes it begins with an independent decision to seek initial consultations, while other times it may be suggested by a doctor, psychiatrist or a close person.”
